Unwritten — Still BecomingBegin

Online vision boards

A picture of the life you're building — wired to the plan behind it.

A vision board keeps your future somewhere you'll actually see it. But a board covered in wishes is only half the idea. When every image is tied to a written ambition — and a few of those ambitions become dated goals with real next steps — the board stops being decoration and starts being direction.

The short version

See it clearly. Name it precisely. Act on it weekly.

The picture keeps the destination alive. The written ambition makes it concrete. The goal gives it a date. The weekly action makes it real. A good online vision board holds the first part; the rest of your system holds the rest.

How a vision board connects to your goals

Psychologists studying goals have long noted that clearly specified intentions are far more likely to be acted on than vague desires — knowing precisely what you want, and when you intend to do it, changes behaviour more than enthusiasm does. A vision board is a tool for the first half of that: it forces clarity about what you actually want, and keeps it emotionally present.

The second half is structure. An image of a sunlit kitchen does nothing on its own — but an image of a sunlit kitchen, linked to the ambition "a home with morning light", linked to a goal with a savings target and a monthly milestone, becomes something you can act on this week. The board supplies the wanting; the system supplies the way.

That's how we treat boards in Unwritten: every image can point to the ambition it belongs to, and any ambition can be promoted into a goal with a target date, milestones and a next action. Nothing on your board is decorative unless you want it to be.

Building one that works

Five steps, in order. The order matters more than the tools.

  1. 01

    Name what you want

Before any picture goes up, write the ambition down in plain words. A board built on vague feelings drifts; a board built on named ambitions has somewhere to go.

  2. 02

    Collect the images

Gather pictures that genuinely represent the life you're describing — the kitchen, the route, the work, the ordinary Tuesday. Specific beats aspirational.

  3. 03

Connect each image to an ambition

This is the step most boards miss. Every image should point back to the written ambition it belongs to, so the board is an index of your future, not a collage of moods.

  4. 04

    Turn a few into goals

You can't act on two hundred ambitions at once. Choose a handful, give them a target date and a first milestone, and let the rest stay safely on the board.

  5. 05

    Visit, review, adjust

A board is a living thing. Look at it during your weekly review, move things that no longer fit, and celebrate the pictures that have quietly become your life.

Questions people ask

Do vision boards actually work?

A vision board on its own doesn't change anything — it's paper (or pixels). What works is the loop around it: naming what you want, keeping it visible, and turning a small part of it into dated goals with next actions. The board's job is to keep the direction in sight while you do the doing.

What should I put on a vision board?

Images that represent things you genuinely want — a place, a way of working, a kind of morning, a trip, a home. The most useful images are specific rather than generic: the actual street, the actual kind of studio, the actual sort of week you want to be living.

How is an online vision board different from a paper one?

An online board lives everywhere your phone does, so it's there in the moments a paper board wouldn't be. Better still, when each image is linked to a written ambition and an active goal, the board becomes part of a working plan rather than a poster on a wall.

How many images should a vision board have?

However many honestly represent what you want. Some people keep a single board with twenty images; others keep several — a future home, travel, work — each tied to its own set of ambitions. What matters is that every picture has a reason to be there.
